Celebrating National Cash Out Day: Why Cash Still Matters
April 22, 2025
At Next Payments, we proudly support payment choice - and that means ensuring Australians have the freedom to pay how they want, when they want. Whether you prefer using a card, digital wallet, or cash, the most important thing is that you have the option.
Today, we are excited to recognise National Cash Out Day - a day dedicated to celebrating cash as a reliable, secure, and inclusive payment method that continues to play a vital role in our communities.
Why Cash Still Counts
While the growth of digital payments is undeniable, cash has not disappeared. In fact, it is making a steady comeback.
We were pleased to see Scott Pape, The Barefoot Investor, recently highlight the importance of cash in today’s economy. As one of Australia’s most trusted voices in finance, his message echoes what we have long believed - cashflow is critical for both consumers and businesses.
According to RBA figures, cash withdrawals are on the rise:
- December 2022: $8.6 billion
- December 2023: $8.86 billion
- December 2024: $9.1 billion
These numbers speak for themselves: Australians are still choosing cash - and more frequently than before.
The Many Benefits of Cash
Aside from being a trusted part of everyday life, here is why cash remains a key part of the payment ecosystem:
- Cash is Secure
Unlike EFTPOS or digital banking apps, cash can not be hacked. It’s untraceable, doesn’t leave a digital footprint, and protects your privacy from being monitored by banks or third parties.
- Cash Attracts Zero Fees
Paying with cash means no surcharges or transaction fees - saving money for both consumers and buisnesses.
- Cash is Reliable
We have all experienced outages or technical issues with cards or apps. Cash doesn’t rely on technology - it works every time, no matter what.
Making Cash More Accessible Than Ever
At Next Payments, we are proud to provide access to cash via our Australian and New Zealand network of ATMs. And with our new Tap & Go feature, it is now easier than ever to withdraw cash - even if you have left your physical card at home. Simply tap your phone or smart device and simple withdraw your cash.
Whether it is $20 or $1000, we encourage everyone to withdraw some cash today and enjoy the freedom of spending it wherever you choose - whether that is a local café, a small business, or just having some extra cash in your wallet for a rainy day.
Thank you for supporting a future where everyone has the freedom to choose how they pay.
