Is Australia moving towards a ‘cashless’ society? | The 7:30 Report with CEO Tim Wildash
December 10, 2024
On Monday 2nd December, Tim Wildash (CEO) sat down with The 7:30 Report on ABC to discuss the talks around moving to a cashless society in Australia.
With increasing discussions within the media about moving to a cashless society as well as banks removing their ATMs from across the country, Wildash says that banks are in fact reducing their cash handling and focusing more on digital payments to prioritise their shareholders. However, Wildash says that independent ATM providers, such as Next Payments are in fact seeing an increase in market share, showing that there is still a demand for cash within our communities.
Considering the tumultuous nature of payments networks, especially in regional and rural areas, as well as the value of cash in comparison to service and network fees of cashless payments, Wildash believes that it is up to the government to promote and uphold the use of cash within the country.
